Privacy Policy
Messages From Above (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the Edify Me mobile application (the “App”) for iOS and Android. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We have written it in plain language because we want you to understand it.
1. Information we collect
Onboarding profile
When you complete onboarding, you provide a small set of personal answers: a name or preferred form of address, an age range, an optional self‑reported mental‑health state (a categorical answer such as “doing okay”), and multiple‑choice preferences about your spiritual goal, life season, stressors, and similar context. This information is stored locally on your device and is sent to our backend only when needed to generate personalized content for you.
Daily verse and intake content
When you request a daily verse or submit an “intake” (free‑form text describing your situation), the text is sent to our backend, which forwards relevant fields to Anthropic’s Claude API to generate a personalized response. Your intake text is processed in transit and is not retained on our servers after the response is returned. We do not log the content of your intakes or the content of Claude’s responses.
Technical and usage information
Our backend logs request metadata only:
- Which endpoint was called and the HTTP status code
- Request timing in milliseconds
- Anthropic API token counts (used for billing reconciliation)
- A categorical “crisis level” classification (none, distress, or imminent) used to determine whether to display emergency resources
- Rate‑limit state, keyed by a hashed per‑device identifier
We do not log your name, profile answers, intake content, Claude’s responses, IP addresses, or any field that could identify you.
Subscription and payment information
In‑app subscriptions are processed by Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Superwall. Payment information (card numbers, billing addresses, etc.) is handled by Apple and Google and is never visible to us. We receive only an entitlement token confirming that you have an active subscription.
2. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Generate personalized daily verses and responses to your intakes
- Detect content indicating a mental‑health crisis and display appropriate emergency resources
- Enforce per‑device rate limits to prevent abuse of the AI‑generation backend
- Verify your subscription status with the relevant store
We do not use your information for advertising, behavioral profiling, retargeting, sale to third parties, or any analytics beyond essential service operation.
3. Third‑party services
The following third‑party services receive limited information necessary to operate the App. Each is governed by its own privacy policy.
- Anthropic (Claude API) — receives your intake text and the minimum profile attributes required to generate a response.
- Cloudflare (Workers, KV storage) — hosts our backend infrastructure.
- Superwall — manages our paywall presentation, in‑app purchase flow, and entitlement state.
- Apple App Store and Google Play Store — handle billing, refunds, and subscription lifecycle events.
- Expo (push notification delivery) — if you opt in to a daily notification, Expo’s push service delivers it.
4. Crisis content handling
If your intake text contains language suggesting suicidal ideation, self‑harm, or imminent danger, our backend classifier flags the content categorically as distress or imminent. Based on the classification, the App will display emergency resources within the screen and may show a blocking modal.
We do not contact emergency services on your behalf. We do not share any data with crisis hotlines. We do not retain a record of crisis classifications beyond the categorical metadata log entry described above, which contains no identifying information.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988. Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741.
5. Children’s privacy
The App is intended for users 13 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with information, please contact us at support@messagesfromabove.app and we will delete it.
6. Your rights and choices
You can:
- Access your profile by viewing your onboarding answers in the App’s Settings.
- Delete your profile from the device by using “Redo onboarding” in Settings, which wipes all locally stored profile data.
- Withdraw consent by uninstalling the App. Because intake content is not retained server‑side, uninstalling effectively removes all data we have about you (with the exception of the categorical metadata logs described above, which contain no identifying information).
- Request data export or deletion of any remaining metadata by emailing support@messagesfromabove.app.
If you are a resident of California, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with applicable data protection laws, you may have additional rights, including the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. We will respond to verified requests within applicable legal timelines.
7. Data retention
- Profile and onboarding answers — stored locally on your device until you delete the App or use “Redo onboarding.”
- Intake content and generated responses — not retained on our servers; discarded immediately after each response is delivered.
- Metadata logs — retained for up to 30 days for operational monitoring and rate‑limit enforcement, then deleted.
8. Security
All communication between the App and our backend uses HTTPS. The Anthropic API key is stored as a server‑side secret in Cloudflare and is never exposed to the App or to any client. We do not store payment information.
9. Scripture text
Bible verses displayed in the App are drawn from a public‑domain translation bundled with the App. We do not transmit verse text to our backend or to third parties.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Effective date” at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after a change indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
